Most homes built in Miami before the 1980’s have cast iron piping. This trend continued for a bit longer, but most homes past that usually have PVC piping. Cast iron has been used for decades and is overall a durable pipe system. It’s main issue however, is the oxidation process that occurs in it. Because cast iron pipes carry various forms of liquids and wastes, a chemical reaction occurs and hydrogen sulfide gasses begin to form. Once the gases begin to oxidize, it takes the form of corrosive sulfuric acid. The acid then begins to rust and eat away at the pipes from the inside out cause the pipes to flake up and clog.
